Dear NASUWT members,

A special welcome to new members. You may have come to us from another union or you may be new to the profession. In any case you are very, very welcome and congratulations on joining the best teachers’ trade union! Don't forget to recruit a colleague and if you do and are named on their application you'll receive a Love to Shop voucher.

Team NASUWT Lewisham has been busy this half term. We are fully involved in trying to consult on school reorganisations at Prendergast, Drumbeat and Sedgehill. So far teacher redundancy figures are low although a few redundancies are a few too many. A big concern is the middle manager reorganisations where TLR holders are going to be asked to do more for less. These are, in our view, budget led initiatives and together with cuts to support staff nearly everywhere the impact could be felt keenly.

I continue to press the Local Authority to put better strategies in place to protect our members against violent incidents in schools and colleges. My advice is: To refuse to carry out gate duties on your own. To ensure thorough risk assessments are carried out for any school social event e.g. Parents and Careers evenings. And to ask your school management what the difference is between a fire alarm and a lock down alarm. I've written to our General Secretary and hopefully our advice on keeping safe will be reissued after Easter. In the meantime it can be found on our national website www.nasuwt.org.uk, there is also a link on our Lewisham website www.nasuwtlewisham.org.uk which you can follow to then be directed to the nations website.

Best wishes

Kathy Duggan

Dear NASUWT members

It's been a busy start to 2019 for NASUWT Lewisham.

We are challenging employers when cuts to school budgets impact on our members' working lives. Special Education provision is seeing cuts. NASUWT members are severely affected by cuts to teaching and support staff in Special Schools. So far both Drumbeat and Abbey Manor schools are undergoing reorganisations and NASUWT are taking part in those consultations. We are working to lessen the impact on our members.

Working in Inner London schools and colleges is frontline - I am continuing to press Lewisham Authority on the protocols for major incidents. Our members' Saftey is at risk if major incidents continue to be unplanned for and unrehearsed - training for major incidents needs to be a priority. If you have received training for major incidents in your school, or college please let me know - we need a clear picture of what's going on in Lewisham.

Remember OFSTED and the Dfe under pressure from NASUWT have agreed that pure data targets for pupils and students are no longer appropriate for your performance management. They have also agreed that you needn't be doing more than two or three data drops a year.

National Conference is in Belfast at Easter. Lewisham are sending a delegation PLEASE VOTE ONLINE OR USING THE BALLOT PAPER IN TEACHING TODAY FOR MOTION 24 - IT's OURS!

Lewisham Nominated Angela Butler to serve as your National Junior President 2019/20. This is a four year commitment leading to National President in the third year. For various technical reasons the election needs to be re run. DON'T FORGET TO VOTE AGAIN when you receive the ballot papers.
